Team Wisconsin is a collection of the best high school hockey players that call Wisconsin their home. The team is referred to as a "before and after" team because all games and practices are only conducted before and after the WIAA high school season. Team Wisconsin, under the approval and authority of Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA), was founded in spring 1999. Starting in fall 2002, Team Wisconsin will now offer a midget minor U-16 team. For the first time in history, USA Hockey will have a midget minor national tournament.
One of the primary purposes of the program is to give the most talented Wisconsin kids exposure to scouts. An additional purpose of the program is to give our top Wisconsin players incentive to stay home and not depart early. The home rink for Team Wisconsin is the best facility in the state, Greenheck Ice Arena in Schofield.
The first three seasons were a tremendous success, in terms of wins/losses, and for having players get exposure to scouts. Team Wisconsin won the USA Hockey National Championship in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2002. The year before, Team Wisconsin won the Central District championship in Chicago and advanced to the national tournament in Philadelphia. Several former players have been drafted in the NHL draft, several players have signed Division 1 scholarships, and two former players have played with the USA National Development Team in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Once again, Team Wisconsin's midget major U-18 team is part of the Upper Midwest High School Elite League. Because of Team Wisconsin's success, Minnesota and North Dakota have formed teams modeled after our program. North Dakota has one team representing their state, and Minnesota has formed regional teams.
Team Wisconsin's midget minor U-16 team will play in the Elite II Hockey league, which includes several Minnesota teams and one team from North Dakota. The midget major and midget minor teams will reconvene in the spring with the goal to reach their respective national tournaments.
We look forward to a great season this year. Hockey fans are encouraged to come out and support Team Wisconsin!
